Obituary for Mary Price Hornby
Mary Price Hornby, 81, Gettysburg, PA formerly of Ridgewood, New Jersey passed away from Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Paramount Senior Living in Fayetteville, PA.
She was born April 7, 1940 in Scarsdale, NY the daughter of Wesley and Olga Feldsine Price. Mary was a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Ramsey, NJ where she joyfully sang in the choir for 30 years and served for a time as Warden. She is a graduate of Catholic University in Washington, DC. Mary began her career as a reporter for the Catholic magazine “Jubilee,” spending several years living in Rome, Italy covering the Vatican Council and as an editor for Chapman Ltd., an ecclesiastic publisher. As her career progressed, she became a publicist for Viking Press in New York, a position she held for many years.
As Mary set roots in NYC, she met her husband, David, over a crossword puzzle on Long Island Beach in the summer of ‘68. During their early years together, Mary and David enjoyed going to see movies, running, biking in Central Park and traveling, including several memorable trips to England, skiing in the Alps together, the yearly upstate NY fall cider press party and weekend ski trips up to Vermont with their close Tower House friends.
Mary overcame a couple health challenges in her youth. Just before her wedding day, Mary had a bad skiing accident and broke her leg in multiple places. She was determined to carry on with the wedding and got wheeled down the aisle in a hard cast from toe to mid-thigh. Shortly after getting married, she battled and overcame breast cancer. Mary ran in many road races in the years to follow to help support breast cancer research and as a proud cancer survivor. In addition, also has also led a sober path and was dedicated to her AA Program for over 40 years!
Always wanting kids, Mary and David decided to adopt and move to the suburbs of northern NJ. One fall day, while stewing her traditional peach jam, they got the magical call from Colombia that their first child, Christina, was born. Four years later, their son, Mark, was also born in Colombia and the whole family took a longer trip down to visit the country.
Mary helped raise their family in Ridgewood, NJ where both kids attended kindergarten through high school. Mary was always an avid participant at musical recitals, swim meets and sporting events; almost everything her kids were involved with.
Mary and David always started their day with reading the NY Times over breakfast, coffee and classical music. And one of her favorite Ridgewood enjoyments was a jog around the park followed by a swim at the town’s Graydon Pool. She was also a member of League of Women’s Voters.
Mary’s main hobbies included gardening, especially planting lilacs and daffodils, picking fresh raspberries and cooking. She loved feeding others; baking batches and batches of holiday cookies, including her memorable sugar cookies, short bread, mint meringues, almond macaroons, and her famous Helen Dakin’s Mother Filled Cookies. An Easter didn’t pass without her amazing coffee cake, or a Christmas without her spinach souffle or a birthday without her rich dark chocolate cake topped with decadent butter cream icing. In fact, she perfected sending this birthday cake in the mail to wherever her kids lived once they left the house! But Mary’s personal indulgence was chocolate and could be found sneaking bites of the blocks of fudge or mixed chocolate candies the family got for her as gifts.
Over the years, the family was fortunate to have taken many memorable trips together. They RVed through Novia Scotia, Canada, visited the Mary’s parents in Lake George, NY (and the arcade around the corner) and family friends in Claygate, Surrey outside of London, England. They spent many a Thanksgiving in Boston with family friends and many summer vacations on Cape Cod. The kids also grew up skiing and they took plenty of trips to mountains in Vermont, especially to their favorite ungroomed slopes of Mad River Glen. One of Mary’s top vacation spots was Nantucket, where she could pick wild blueberries and take numerous dips in the ocean with her kids and family friends who so graciously invited the Hornby family out summer after summer.
After the kids finished college, Mary and David retired to Cape Cod. Mary became a huge Red Sox fan and of baseball in general. They both watched many a game as a pastime. As Mary’s Alzheimer’s progressed, she never stopped doing all she loved and kept an upbeat attitude. She even volunteered to participate in a study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital to help doctors research this awful disease. Her dedication to giving and loving her family and friends will always be remembered…you could see her love radiate from her sparkly clear bright blue eyes.
In addition to her husband, David Hornby (Gettysburg, PA), she is survived by daughter, Christina E. Urego (Los Angeles, CA), son, Mark D. Hornby and his wife Brittany (Frederick, MD), two grandchildren: Leigh and Hayden Hornby, and a sister, Priscilla Clappier (Doylestown, PA).
A Celebration of Life for Mary will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday November 13, 2021 at St John's Memorial Episcopal Church at 301 E. Main Street, Ramsey, NJ, 07446. In lieu of memorial flowers, a donation to support Mary’s love of trees can be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, arborday.org or to support the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
